Mark,

Imagine yourself sailing the boat on the wire, and then try to estimate/measure it to where your
hand is. including when the vang is all the way _off, _(When the vang is off, it sucks more line and hence thats should be your measiuring position)
and you are in the back of the boat. I think thats the best way to do it. better go long to begin with, since its easy to cut off if there is too much there.

I dont know the specific length, but its there so the cleat can grab it,
as well as easier to hold in your hand.
I have had it run all the way. Basically used it for the entire vang line.
