The two step strips installed, along with the first "connector" strip which joins the outside strips to the centre strips. I was worried about how wide to make the centre strips before starting the herringbone pattern, mostly because the manual says to install "7 strips" in the middle before starting the herringbone. Well, 7 is odd - what's with that? It turns out that the centre strips are mostly flat, and when you get to the point that you need screws to keep them twisted (as I did for the outer yellow cedar strips), that's the time to start the herringbone pattern with the outer strips.
