Adding in some (easily sanded) filler to make things a bit smoother. To get the surface nice and roughed up, I used my (new!) dremel tool - I bought a small sanding spindle and used that to rough it up. The dremel is great for these small nooks that need a bit of roughness to keep the epoxy - I'm glad I got it. It will be useful.
