I drilled pilot holes for the screws (good thing too - one set wasn't quite large enough, and the screws pulled up the glass. Oops.) Then fill the entire centre hole with epoxy so it soaks into the wood. Once that's done soaking, drain it out, fit the fairlead, dip the screws in epoxy, and screw in place.
