: MARTINEZ and FERNANDEZ (ESP) open up the lead 23 Aug. 2004
ATHENS, 23 August - Going in their twelfth race out of sixteen, the 49ers
today had the opportunity to discard two races.
In combination with a very good second place, Iker MARTINEZ and Xavier
FERNANDEZ (ESP), pre-race favourites and 2004 World Champions, have now
opened up the lead in the overall rankings.
Today the 49ers raced late in the afternoon at 17:04, in order to make up
for yesterday's abandoned race.
The wind was the stronger the class has encountered so far, blowing from 90
degrees at 14 knots.
This has been a most interesting race for the Danish crew, who is laying in
the 13th place in the overall rankings.
Michael HESTBAEK and Dennis Dengsoe ANDERSEN claimed the victory, leading
all the way from start to finish.
It was MARTINEZ and FERNANDEZ who claimed second place, coming from sixth in
the first rounding.
It has been a gusty wind with lots of puffs and lulls that the Spanish crew
knew how to take advantage of.
It was a very good race also for Tim WADLOW and Pete SPAULDING (USA) who
came from seventh and finished third, one place ahead of Brits Chris DRAPER
and Simon HISCOCKS.
Not a good day for yesterday's overall leaders Rodion LUKA and George
LEONCHUK (UKR) who finished tenth. Not a good day either for the Brazilian
crew (Andre FONSECA and Rodrigo DUARTE) who capsized as they rounded mark #4
for the second time.
Going into race thirteen, the Spanish lead the overall followed by the
British and the Ukrainians who are on equal points.
The USA is quite close behind while the Finnish crew of Thomas JOHANSON and
Jukka PIIRAINEN will need to have a great day if they want to reserve their
hopes for a place on the podium.
As there are three races scheduled for tomorrow, this is likely to be the
most decisive day for the medals in this class.
