Regarding the Bench Sander modification, see the link to the post at SA. It
has a side view of the sander modification. I'll add more writeup on the
modificationfor publicity sake for the class.

Steve, its hardly worth it. Dave Slevin did all his in about a day or 2. He did
make one very smart modification to the usual belt/disk sander. He cut two 6
inch circles and spaced them apart by about 3 inches. then glued them to the
front of the sanding disk. This brings the sanding surface out 3 inches and
allows you clearance to maneuver around any complex shape.
