Just got back form Puerto Rico (Wedding, Honeymoon, Boat Exploration)

This is slightly off topic, but I thought many of you would be interested in hearing about another back yard boat skiff class. This one is a bit bigger than our Swifts. But I was so impressed with the resourcefulness of the class, and the builders that I thought people would be interested.


The class is called "Chalanas", and it has a very similar history to the Australian 18. Beginning as a boat to move sugar cane form the fields to the plants. In the 1960 most boat owners could no longer afford outboards, so they began converting to sail. This developed into a racing skiff, predominantly made up of blue color workers who like to race.


I had the pleasure of meeting one of the builders, and talking to him about his boat. You can find some pictures here:
