I taped down one side (the heavy side) of the mast. I held up the mast from both ends, and allowed it to fall down the direction it wanted to. I then marked the top on either end. Those are the endpoints. I wrapped the tape around the top edge, unrolled it, and it stuck exactly where it should have, very straight as well.
