I'd stay pretty much with the design here (don't remember anything in the  
rules but look).  The kite's luff was designed for the standard length and  
height pole.  If you lower the outer end by elevating the inner end under  the 
ring, you will be dragging the kite through the back of waves when you sail  in 
big seas.  If you lower the inner end to raise the outer end, you'll be  giving 
up effective length and reaching ability.  If you raise the entire  pole, it 
will not go under the sock properly and will cause a lot of other  problems 
with hoisting and dousing.
