Mike I think you hit the nail on the head. I had a 505 once and I find the Swift
more fun to sail. Race day in De Soto was my third time on the boat and first
time in over 20 years on a trapeze. I did not find the boat hard to sail and I
don't think the learning curve is at all long. The boat is a joy to sail and the
best way to sail them is enjoy it and don't think too much. You don't have time
like you do in other boats. This is not a drawback for me. It just makes it
easier to get lost in the joy of sailing. The boat goes so fast and is so light
that you don't require a lot of strength. Mike's point on the upkeep is also not to be lost. The wood is the core and the only reason you see it is that we cover it in E-glass and clear epoxy. You may cover the wood with some other color if you want it to look like a plastic boat and no one would know. If you do, you loose one of the biggest chances to meet new people there is. They gather more people than a cute little puppy in a park. As for the time spent. The time spent building and sailing your Swift can never be subtracted from you life. I built mine so that I could afford to regain the excitement of high performance sailing without having to dig up someone as hooked on water and adrenaline as I am. My only regret is that I don't have enough time to sail as often as I would like. Remember my mantra: Don't be good. Have lots of fun. Sail fast, live large, and love life.
