If you guys decide to do this, make sure that you make it clear to the RC how
important it is to FORCE the Day Sailors and other boats to stay completly
clear of the starting line until their five minute gun. I'm thinking that
enforced disqualification is the only possible way they will be able to do that
and even that will require 50 Day sailor dsq's on the first start. Imagine
that short starting line (one end on shore) with 65 day sailors 20 feet below
the line during your entire starting sequence in 15 knots of breeze. Bearing
away during the sequence is simply not an option.ÂThese guys believe they own
the starting line regardless of what the RC tells them and they will be there
15 minutes before their start.Â

Upwind you'll be fine but downwind the terror will begin again. You'll have
400 boats coming to weather--300 of which have no comprehension how fast you
are going downwind (you can't assume that being on starboard provides any
protection).

Last, finding the right marks downwind is navigational feat in itself while
dodging other boats. You can not see them very well even with no boats
blocking your view and you need to sail the course in advance and pick good
references on shore.

Everything is pretty easy in 10 knots of breeze and, with luck, that is what
you'll have. Anders (twice, second in the IC worlds) and I sailed this
regatta in 17 knots of breeze and agreed that no amount of money would get us
to do that again.
Ander swas sailing his AC against my Swift at the time. Remember, the Swift
is not a 14 with an extra set of eyes. Be really conservative and careful.

Best regards,

Bram

Sounds like fun Pieter. I'm currently planning on traveling on Saturday,
arriving late, and rigging on Sunday. I'm also planning on going to the Gorge
the week after Huntington Lake. If that doesn't work out, I'd have vacation
time to come early to Huntington Lake. Any interest in going to the Gorge?

For the North American's, I am planning to arrive Friday 7/10 and participate
at theÂ2009 High Sierra Regatta (http://www.fresnoyachtclub.org/) on Saturday
and Sunday. Ron Radko is interested as well.

Â

If we get a few more Swifts and/or Mustos to join the regatta, we can get our
own
start and have a "Pre-North American's".

Â

Ping me if you are interested, so I know whether to make the request for a
Swift/Musto fleet start.

Â

cheers,

Pieter
