(76 1/8 inches).

If my template at station 10 is 74" for it's present width, will it grow 2
1/8" with the finished product? Or is the beam measurement forward or aft
of Station 10?

Subject: Plans vs. templates

Swift Solo Fleet:

Andy and Eldon do bring up a point on the accuracy of templates as opposed
to offsets and plans. I have purchased other plans before and they did come
as plans with offsets. and not just templates drawn on paper. Actually, at
the time, before these points on shrinkage were brought out, I liked it
better? Perhaps the paper issue was not fully considered and therefore
these points have merits. I do know personally that living in Louisiana vs.
Maine, there are some humidity issues to take into account. Perhaps as an
informal test program that each of us that have glued our paper templates to
our MDF could measure the width of the largest form to see first hand if
this is a hypothetical concern or a valid concern?

To get it started and for Bram's edification:

            STATION 10: BEAM WIDTH OVERALL 73 15/16" Arkansas - 025

Personally, I am just building this to have fun and to get out sailing. I
have no experience in class racing. If an inch or two makes a difference in
my mind on who wins or loses a race, who cares? Save it for the Olympics.
I owned a 35' Knutson sloop built in 1958 and being in the Eggemoggin Reach
Regatta in Maine once a year was the extent of my racing. As long as I
didn't hit anyone or run aground, it was just great fun and great sailing.
I was racing against 25' to 50+' classic wooden boats, obviously all
handicapped.

PS Is anyone building out there?

Bram and all.

I am another nonmember subscriber - I am also very impressed with all the
development work that Bram has put into the boat and the class. When my
circumstances and sailing skill allow I shall definitely build one of these
beasts, especially if the class will be promoted in the UK - I'd love to see
a fleet of these boats at Loch Lomond where I sail.

However, whilst I don't agree with our malcontent friend Eldon on most of
his points, as a professional engineer, I can sympathise with some of his
views. Namely that paper is not the best medium to send out what amount to
precision templates. No one doubts that we can all cut accurately to a line
but think about using glue on paper, it can often cause the paper to shrink
as glue dries (depending on the glue). As the class grows would it not be
possible to supply a set of computer cut templates which are guaranteed not
to change shape when stuck to board?

I would have thought the cost of producing a set of templates in
self-adhesive, stable, computer cut, plastic film (mylar perhaps as Eldon
suggests) would be a few tens of dollars. Suitable machinery exists in the
sign writing industry for cutting sign-writing vinyl directly from AutoCad
or similar files. Or if this is prohibitively expensive perhaps you could
provide proper dimensioned plans or at the least print dimensions on to the
paper templates so that these can be checked by hand for shrinkage after the
plan is glued down?

Then it does truely come down to builder skill as any patterns used to gauge
the fairing of the hull will be identical to those of a measurer. Surely
this is just good sense? I for one would be happy to pay a small premium to
have the same measuring tools as an official measurer, and it would silence
any who suggest that CNC has an advantage.

Just my tu'pence worth, apologies if I have missed the point

Rob and other nonmember subscribers,

I hope you will re-subscribe soon. The rules issue is a one time deal since
future changes will be debated and voted on at general membership meetings
unless the class decides otherwise. Live meetings tend to keep things more
rational.

Unlike the problems in many of the other classes, these rules are for a new
class and one should expect some issues when the constitution and direction
of the class is being established.

I can tell you that this is the best group of people that you are likely to
find in any class. Laying this groundwork requires a lot of effort and
we've received input from a large percentage of the class members. Most of
those people have helped me silently and without much recognition. Some
have devoted an unbelievable amount of time and energy to solving problems.

Please don't let one malcontent taint your image of our class. If you could
see my email (god forbid) you'd realize the unity of this group of sailors
as a whole. I think the final vote will demonstrate that unity.

Best regards,

Bram
