Warren,
Because of the extreme angle of the intersection of the bow strips, by the
time you use your plane to plane a 1/4 radius on the front of the boat, it will
be substantially shorter. If you draw a picture of two 1/4" strips
intersecting at 22 degrees you'll get the picture (see the attached PDF).
You'll note that you need to take off 5/8" of the length before you lose any
of the overlap or strength.
