Western Red Cedar is the type of tree. The wood from these can vary quite a bit both in color and density because it is a natural substance. The lighter colors are usually close to the bark and the newer growth. I've tended to notice that it has the highest water content and seems to be softer than the darker wood at the center of the tree. I've seen variation in color from a dark coffee color to almost an eggshell white.

You can lay up your strips if the wood is a bit damp and it will dry quickly on the strongback. If you use "Gorilla Glue" or similar, the moisture will help the glue kick off. If, like me, you use the water based carpenters' glue, it won't hurt there either. A tight fit in the cove and bead are key though. Care and time spent making the strips will save a lot of time when fairing.

Milling your own strips is time consuming but can be rewarding and I think I've saved enough to pay for the needed tools plus a little more over having to buy the precut strips.

Totally beginner question. Does cedar density differ from one source to
another or the part of the tree where the strips are cut from? Does it make
any difference what so ever for our purposes? Does white & red cedar differ
in various attributes other than color? In other words, if you so wanted,
could you build a SwiftSolo completely from white cedar rather than red?
Thanks for your kind assistance.

John,
Try Liberty Cedar, 325 Liberty Lane, West Kingston, RI 02892
401-789-6626. Purchase 1x6 Western Red D&BTR Inland Cedar (S1S2E) Product
Code 5D106. You may want to get some white cedar and mahogany for accent
strips. They may have boards in 14 ft and 16 ft lengths, but you want to
hand-pick ones that are flat grain so that your strips can be cut quarter
sawn for strength. The grain in your strip must run near vertical when the
strip is laid flat on your table. Use a thin kerf saw blade in your table
saw to rip the 1/4"x1" strips. Then mill them with a 1/4" cove and bead
router bit, which will reduce the strips to about 3/4". Mill the bead edge
first and then the cove edge. The cove and bead bits are available from
MLCSWoodWorking.com, called their "canoe" router bits. I got 184 BF,
which produced enough strips for nearly two boats, so I hope that your
estimate is closer.

If you want to buy ready-made strips, the Swift Solo Construction Links
page lists some good sources.
