I think one thing to concider is that some may be worried about the drag
the gunwale might have from the wake of the boat (it should not be in the
water from heeling.) A thin gunwale might have less drag but if it is not
wide enough, it is uncomfortable and more prone to slipping. Swimming due
to a slip is always slower than the slight amount of drag if the wake or a
wave hits a gunwale. Don't be too skimpy on the overhang and you can never
have too much nonskid.
