Steve, a few notes about fairing and colours.

Firstly, don't waste time matching colors on the bottom if you are going to use graphite powder. That stuff goes on thick and it will be a huge waste of time. Save time now and you will reduce your overall time to complete.

Secondly, when applying accent strips of darker cedar, make sure that they are actually darker. I applied two accents on a boat I made and when I sanded the accent strip down, I found out that it was a light strip that was somehow discoloured.

If you really want to get technical about colour matching with epoxy and filler, take a scrap sample of each of the coloured strips that you plan to use and apply a few batches of different mixes of coloidal/ 205/ 207. to each strip. Write the mix quantities down that you use. When these mixes dry on the different colour strips, you will see what the final match really looks like. It is nearly impossible to predict how the colour will dry when it is all wet. Once you have done this mixing exercise, you can use the strips to colour match wherever you need to fill. This is tedious, but is fairly accurate.

Leave the screws in as long as possible to prevent deformation and fill the screw holes just before you glass. Also try to predict what your colour scheme is going to look like ahead of time, if you are going to have a black strip under your gunwhales, it does not matter if you have screw holes there as you will have ample time to fill them before coating with black.

Subject: Fairing nearly complete - a couple of questions

I have nearly finished fairing the hull before putting on the flare. I
enclose a picture. It is really rewarding to see the strips change into a
nice smooth hull shape. The only problem I have had is it is Mid Summer over
here and frequently the temp in the garage has been 36 to 38 degrees (mid
high nineties) and it is hard to keep sweat off the cedar.
My questions in regard to the filling process are

1) Is it best to fill the larger gaps first before the first overall fill
with the epoxy?
2) Have people bothered making the fill for the gaps wood coloured for
practice or just gone with the fairing compound as this part of the hull
will be painted?
3) I have the hull fixed to the assembly in a few areas with screws. When
doing the fill coats have people left out these areas and done them just
prior to glassing? I am concerned that I could inadvertantly bond the screws
to the cedar which could lead to hassles getting them out.

By the way the string I used under the staples to help remove them was a
great timesaver. I simply pulled on end of the string and out they popped.
It was a good idea to wear eye protection whilst doing this. One good tug
could remove 10 -15 staples at a time. Those that didn't come fully out
could easily get pulled by pliers as they were raised up.

Cheers,

Steve
