If the staple gun has an adjustment, you can back off on the power so that
the hammer part does not drive the staple so deep. If it does not, you can
use a lighter touch on the presure you use to hold the gun down. You could
also look at using the string idea or strapping tape to stop the staple
from driving deeply into the wood but still holding tight. As for the knuckle busting. Maybe one of the the many geniuses in this group could come up with a special tool that will get between the strips and forms but keep the hands at a safe distance. Gloves will help with the cuts but then they make holding the tool more problematic and only provide limited protections against the bruising. On the lighter side you can brag about all the blood sweat and tears you put into your craft.
