Sounds like a fast straightforward method to me. I'll be using it. That is plenty close enough for fittings. I remember that station 6 is just forward of the mast step and station eight is at the aft end of the trunk. If a set of fittings are supposed to be placed at 56 P&S find the center of the average staple holes at station 5, subtract 4 inches plus 1/4, and place the fitting.
