Haven't known how to reply since I use a router. Got to agree with Mark
below. Since you've already got a big hole, you can watch the router blade
with
the roller on the end and see that everything is OK. Once you do it this
way, you'll not go back.

Aussies...always trying to do things the hard way. If you use a router bit
with a rub collar you shouldn't have much of a problem, and is probably the
safest way of doing the job in respect of not taking out too much material.
Just keep the router vertical. Maybe make up a mock trunk and bottom and
practice on it. I can't think of any other safe way of not removing too much
material with some sort of power tool.
