Instead of using a big router, I used a laminate trimmer. It was much  
smaller, lighter and easier to use. The router bit with the bearing on the  
bottom 
keeps you from going past the insert opening, while the variable speed  set to 
its slowest setting allows you to work at a cautious pace.  Keeping  the 
trimmer parallel to the case was easy to do without creating an fancy  base. 
It also made quick work of the insert blocks.
