Any molded boat would have to be that same weight as the cedar hull since its in the rules what the minimum weight is. Moreover, there is a swing test for this class, so the molded boat would have the same center of vertical and horizontal gravity as the average cedar hull. Having the ability to build a cedar hull would allow minor variations that might not be present in the molded hull. These might be beneficial or not. Cedar boats will likely be more durable whatever the panel construction of the molded boats and they will look a whole lot better. I don't think the cedar Swift will ever disappear, even if molded hulls are allowed. Robert is right about the hull cost if you build its not the most expensive part although it is the most important. The Swift is still the same price as the 49er and cheaper than a new 5o5 or an I14. The 9er is only 24 inches bigger and a whole lot simpler in construction and is not durable by any stretch of the imagination. I'm glad we have such a good value boat.
Lets go sailing and not obsess about the molded hull, its time may come, but it is not now.
