Bram, Bill and everyone,

Thanks again for your help. I'm off to Bunnings to get a Dremel!

I've been doing a heap of work over here with masts and sails. The first
thing I will say is do not under estimate the amount of time it saves by having
the ability to simply "order and go" with the packages that Bram has put
together.
I have spent hour upon hour sweating out details to make sure our Aussie
Swifts have a good rig. I'm confident that this will be achieved but it has
required a lot of effort.

Some things I've discovered along the way

Riley make an awesome High Load stainless steel exit block Part No PYF470.
I'll be using this for jib halyard, spin pole tack line exit, receiving tube
spin pole launcher. Chris Dixon at CST recommends them. He uses them on his 18
and they never fail plus no reaction problems with the carbon as they are fully
stainless - they aren't expensive either.
Spin pole retracts into receiving tube which is lined at both ends with
acetal. This material has a very low coefficent of drag (details on
http://www.dotmar.com.au/products.htm#acetal)
and will result in very low friction hoists. Using the receiving tube will
also mean 1 less hole in the deck as the pole launching block can be located on
the receiving tube.
The CST section for the mast is slightly stiffer fore & aft but softer
sideways than the Forte section.
I'm going to use 2 sets of spreaders which can have their sweep adjusted to
fine tune control of the mast.

At the end of the day I still have to prove all this works - if it does I'll
be in a better position to say whether it is an improvement or not!!

  Cheers,

  Steve

  Thanks Bill,

Seeing the quality of the work that you (and the others) are doing is what
makes this fun. I don't know if you feel this way but my Swift experience has
made me feel that I can make any part in my garage and it will be lighter and
stronger than anything I can buy (a problem now that Jane realizes this). The
combined knowledge of all of the builders in this class is something to behold
and I've learned more from them than they from me.

Keep up the good work Bill. It looks like you're about ready to get wet?
Will you be able to make a clinic and regatta out West this coming summer?

  Bram
