Dont fret it will probably come out nice any way. You must get good contact
of each side down the trailing edge and afterwards dont grind that edge too
close to the foam core. Did you use a wegde on the a ledge of the stand to
allow you to set up the slipery wet core without loading up the core with
the weight of the saddles and their plywood backing? and then clamp lightly
and remove the wedges to tighten the weave?? Its an important step. Anyway, yes, I think the better way may be to put a spar or two down the center. It strengthens the core during the layup and hugely strengthens the board after and while in use. If you post on the forum when I get more time I'll post pictures and a how to reply.
