I just started milling strips Monday. I have found sorces of pretty clear
ceder 2X4 decking (5/4?). It tends to be a bit on the green side. Anyway, I
am using 7 1/4 thin kurf carbide rip blade with stabalizers on my table saw.
The kurf is .067 to .07. Because of moisture and sanding considerations, I am
milling to a thickness of .285 to .290. I am expecting a 10% shrinkage rate as
the weather gets drier. Out of the 2X4 (1 1/2 X 3 1/2) I am yelding 10 strips.
I am using 2 feather boards on the saw to keep the lumber tight to the fence
and table. This is getting me a smoth, uniform finish on the cut. I am paying
between 10 and 13 bucks for a 16 footer-- I will barter with Home Despot and
Lowes if I can find a flaw in a board that is actually usable for me. Bigest
advice-- give each board a good check for staples before you start cutting.

to easily check on the local price of 5/4 decking at your area lumber yards,
ask them about 1 inch corner boards too, could be cheaper. It is available
almost everywhere except the Borg. You will loose 2 strips off each board so
get the 6inch wide (or greater ) variety because of the rounded corner. But if
you use a Freude thin kerf blade you pick that up again in less kerf wastage.
The WRC decking boards are usually available in clear at 16 ft (and were at all
the lumber yards I checked here in NJ). You need to go select the boards from a
place that has a lot of stock. You will be looking for the flat sawn boards
with no knots. I had to select through a big pile to get all mine but they
don't mind the mess if you show the guys in the yard
the picture of the boat. BTW 5/4 boards lets you make slightly wider strips
than the 3/4 inch raven strips and which seem to behave the same to me.

Mike I milled mine for approximately $750-800 US dollars in timber (selected
flat sawn 5/4 clear WRC decking at 25% 16ft and 75%14 ft ) and 2 router bits.
I already had a planer and a table saw. The cost would be similar if you needed
to buy the table saw, thin kerf blade and the routers. Brams source of selected
cedar corner boards was much cheaper. He will tell you, but I could not source
that locally, therfore no selection.

Bram,
What is the approximate cost of milling strips yourself, assuming you already
have the proper tools for the job?
Thanks,
