Sure, removing the 5200 from the track is easy because it doesnt stick to ABS
at all! Removing it completely from the mast is a pain because 5200 sticks well
to epoxy.
1+1LPU is HARD and lasts and looks nice virtually forever, spar vanish is not
and will not last forever, but its up to you. White is optimal anyway.
As for Shim material there are a lot of alternatives. UHMWPE is a good one as
is PTFE and PEEK. All come in sheets and are adhesive backed. Check with me
first if you like when you have your gap measured. Its silly to pay for a full
sheet only to use 4 square inches. If I have the right thickness for you ( I
have a couple of thicknesses) I'll give you some of mine. In any case look at
Page 3396-7 for some options. Just to note these plastic shims are also good
between the cheeks of the vang pivot. For Rob (and me) I cut a disk about 1"
diam and stick it on the vang lever where it rubs on the pivot cheeks and the
vang arms. No sticking, no binding, works well.

Greg,
Bill at Forte Spars is removing my old mast track and replacing it with new
track bonded with Plexus. He said the removal of the old track is easy
compared to removing the 5200 from the old track. He also recommended plain
old marine varnish on the spars for UV protection after a light sanding with
Scotch-Bite pads. He showed me an example that looked great. This solution is
cheaper and easier than 2 part polyurethane.
Regarding the adhesive-backed HMW sheet for the vang shim, I could not figure
out which part number/section of the McMaster Carr web site to locate the stock
and thickness that I need. If you could point me to the right page, that would
help. Based on your suggestions and Bram's second, the vang sleeve/collar
setup is the way to go.
Thanks,
Bill Scheumann
