Dave, One of the tricks that might help when coming to shore (except upwind) is to pull your rudder up halfway before pulling the board out. You can then sail the boat sideways by healing it to weather and pushing the helm to leeward. That way you can jump out in a couple of feet of water instead of 3 or 4. Also, I'd talk to Mike since he's landed on that beach a thousand times and I don't think he's had a problem with his rudder? I fear that kick up rudders are pretty much a thing of the past--on skiffs anyway. They are usually heavy and would have to be built really tough to take the lateral loads that skiffs would give them. The ends of the boat are a bad place to add weight as it increases inertia--a bad thing (slow) when steering through waves. Just some thoughts.
