I tried the finger joints but they just don't work in this application as
well as a 12:1 scarf joint. IT does cut down on waste a bit but I had a lot
of them come apart and I never had a failure with the scarf joints.

Don't know if it would work out better in the end, but I called Adams &
Kennedy on your behalf (http://www.wood-source.com) and got today's
prices of:

Western Red Cedar (Select Grade - for boats, kayaks & canoes) 4 quarter
stock.

$6.12/boardfoot Canadian dollars (around PAR) for lengths OVER 16'

$5.10/boardfoot CDN for lengths under 16'

I'm sure there would be brokerage and any duties applicable, but I've
had great results from their stock on my projects (and I hope someday to
build a Swift).

I milled my last project's strips from WRC from Adams & Kennedy.

If my experience is of any relevance, it's better to order more at full
lengths than you expect because you do encounter non-perfect strips
where you get shorter lengths during the milling process.

I'm planning on trying glued finger joints on WRC myself for a kayak
(for my wife) to make longer stock out of 8' fence lengths (very
cheap). If I glue and finger join boards before the milling process I
think I'll end up with well matched and almost invisible full length
stock at a fraction of the cost. Lee Valley (http://www.leevalley.com)
has got great finger joint router bits right here in town.

Cheers and good luck,

Adams & Kennedy are not answering phones this afternoon as they are
doing inventory. They'll be there first thing tomorrow morning. Thye
have a lot of experience shipping into the States.
