Get the same number of linear feet overall. (I have strip counts of how
much I used, but I'd have to sit down and decipher my scribbles.)

Also, don't forget you'll need some solid stock for other bits and pieces -
the bow piece, the backing plates on the inside of the transom, etc.

How many 2x8's would you recommend I get should I use scarfs for the longer
pieces?

Matt -- if it were me, i would go with the shorter stock, and do a 12-1 (or
8-1) scarf. I wound up scarfing some joints just because I liked the look
(despite the fact that I had really long strips). If you set up a little
jig on your sander, it's a piece of cake to make them, and they're really
strong.

I heard back from mcgee lumber this morning, they say:

"We do carry 2X8 and 2X12 in clear vertical grain cedar. Price per linear
foot for 2X8 is $13.00 and 2X12 is $24.00."

Which makes a 16' plank of 2x8 $208 and a 12' plank $156. I'll need 6 of
them for 360 strips exactly, I'm guessing that I'll have plenty of extra due
to only 25% or so needing to be 16 feet. Is that price reasonable? Should
I order only 2 boards at 16' and the rest at 12' to save some $$ or will the
extra come in handy?

2 16's and 4 12's come out to $1040.

Matt,

I too had a hard time finding appropriate grade WRC. Finally Greg Ryan had
a secret place that needed to be wrung out of him by force. Well not
really.

I did a girdle er, no a google search and found one promising result.

www.mcgeelumber.com/cedar.htm Charlotte, NC

It's quite a ways from SC, but it looks highly promising.

On my skiff, there are a few scarf joints here and there. Making additional
strips where uniform color was required was usefull. Asthetically, it
wasn't too bad. You really have to look carefully too see the joints. The
glue line gives it away.

I used a two inch long scarf join, made with a jig and handplane. I've no
pictures to post. I'm just back in the country, and hopefully the scarf jig
is still in the shop. To the uneducated eye, my prize winning scarf jig
looks like a peice of scrap.

Having a helluva time finding cedar planks in SC. Is anyone nearby that can
suggest a place to look?

If worst comes to worst I've got a local lumber yard that can order, but
that gets very expensive very quick. I'll be calling some folks in Myrtle
Beach and Columbia today, but I thought I'd turn to the list and see if
anyone's got any leads in this corner of the country.

I'd be willing to drive several hours in any direction (SC, GA, NC, maybe FL
or VA if price is right) to get a few nice clear WRC planks.
